Died February 12, 2008
Retired Army Col. Richard Reynolds Rust, 59, a longtime Leesburg resident, who was with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, died Feb. 12 while skiing.

A memorial service will be held May 17 at Oatlands Church of Our Saviour in Leesburg.

Col. Rust was an avid equestrian, pilot, skier and motorcyclist. He attended Loudoun County High School before transferring to
Mercersberg Academy in Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1966. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, in 1972, he received a master's and doctorate degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M in 1979 and 1986, respectively.

A field artillery officer and Ranger School honor graduate, he retired from the Army in July 2002. He recently completed an award-winning documentary film about his mother, the late Jane Pohl Rust, notable equestrian, and his book about her is forthcoming from Derrydale Press.

Survivors include two sons, Henry Rust and Richard Rust, both of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Janet Rust, also of Raleigh; a half-sister, Tiffany Rust Crone of Finksburg, Md.; and a half-brother, Snowden Rust, also of Finksburg.
