Orbital launches satellite
Two months after losing one of its rockets and a NASA satellite in a crash, Orbital Sciences Corp. successfully got another satellite into orbit.
The Dulles-based company's Tactical Satellite-3, which was built for the U.S. Air Force, was taken into space May 19 on an Orbital-made Minotaur I rocket, the company announced in a press release.
The launch was from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island near Chincoteague. The satellite made orbit at approximately 285 miles above Earth shortly after 8 p.m.
This was the 16th mission for the company's Minotaur rocket program since its inception in 2000.
On Feb. 24, an Orbital Taurux XL rocket carrying a $278 million satellite made to measure greenhouse gas emissions crashed moments after takeoff in California.
Later this year, Orbital will launch the TacSat-4, the next in the Air Force’s series of smaller-sized tactical satellites. That launch will occur in Alaska.
Business expo next month
Loudoun's largest business show and forum is scheduled for June 11, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the National Conference Center in Lansdowne.
Called the B2BizOps Procurement & Professional Services Expo, the event is an opportunity for local business leaders to meet new vendors and learn about possible contracting opportunities.
The Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event, and is still accepting reservations for exhibit space from companies and government agencies. Prices range from $250 to $1,000.
