Vet holding open house

GeoEye sees higher revenues

Dulles-based GeoEye Inc. reported May 11 an increase in revenues for the first quarter of this year compared to the same span in 2008. The satellite-imagery company made $45.2 million the first three months of 2009, a 26 percent increase from last year's first quarter. In part, the company attributed the bump in revenues to a new satellite becoming operational in February, resulting in more business from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

Vendor meeting scheduled

The county is holding an information exchange session May 21 at 10:30 a.m. for area vendors wanting to learn more about doing business with the county. The session will touch on the county’s procurement processes and upcoming contracts. The session will take place in the Lovettsville Room at the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison St. SE, Leesburg.

Business seminar May 27

The Loudoun Small Business Development Center is holding a seminar May 27 on how to start a business. Taxes, licensing, business plan development, sources of financing, marketing and business insurance will be discussed. The seminar will take place at the Comfort Suites, 80 Prosperity Ave., Leesburg, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The fee is $10 if registered or $15 at the door. Wheat yield to drop off

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Virginia Field Office said it expects Virginia's wheat crop to shrink this year. It expects state farmers to yield 16 million bushels of wheat in 2009, down 19 percent from 2008. In Loudoun, wheat is grown on approximately 1,300 acres, placing the county 36th in Virginia in wheat production, according to the USDA. The USDA did not give a reason for the expected drop off.

Company being bought

German software company SAP said this month it is in the process of buying Sterling-based Clear Standards Inc. The two-year-old company creates applications that measure greenhouse gas emissions and other substances that harm the environment. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Business mixer May 28

The Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a social for “young professionals” May 28 at Purcellville's Sunset Hills Vineyard. A shuttle will take attendees to the event from Lansdowne Town Center at 5:30 p.m. and will return to the town center at 8 p.m. You can register to attend at www.loudounchamber.org.
