Habitat for Humanity store to open Purcellville

The first Habitat for Humanity store within the borders of Loudoun is scheduled to open in Purcellville in April.

Called ReStores, the hardware outlets are known for giving new life to gently used tools and building materials, such as cabinets, appliances, tiles and windows.

Most of the items for sale in ReStores are donated by local retailers, suppliers and building contractors, who often, after completing a job, dispose of their unused materials in the local dump.

“We like this because it's green,” said Alta Jones, president of Loudoun Habitat for Humanity. “It keeps more stuff out of the landfill.”

The 22,000-square-foot Purcellville ReStore will be in the middle of town at 751 E. Main St. Its proceeds will benefit Loudoun Habitat for Humanity and its efforts to build houses for the county's needy.

A grand-opening celebration is planned for April 18. The store, however, will be open to customers beginning April 2.

The facility will be the third ReStore in Northern Virginia, with the other two in Alexandria and Manassas.

Since ReStore prices are as much as 90 percent below retail, the outlets often attract small home-remodeling companies and thrifty homeowners with a weekend project to tackle, Jones said.

But, she added, “with the economic climate we are in, do-it-yourselfers may be even more prevalent.”

The store will be open for donations March 21 and 28. Arrangements can be made to have items picked up. See www.loudounrestore.org or call 703-737-6772 to learn more.
