Skating facility proposed
Plans are under way to open an indoor roller rink and skateboarding park in eastern Loudoun.According to a letter sent to county zoning officials, inquiries have been made about the possibility of building such a facility either in Ashburn's Beaumeade Corporate Park off the Loudoun County Parkway or in the Sterling Park Business Center off Sterling Boulevard.
Howard Whang, a Vienna-based Realtor who was listed on the letter as a contact, said the facility would be available for roller-skating and skateboarding. He said Loudoun was being considered because “it has the available space.”
He directed further questions to another person involved in the project, who did not return a call seeking more details.
There are no indoor skateboarding facilities in Loudoun, but there is an outdoor skate park at Ida Lee Park in Leesburg. As for roller-skating, Purcellville has a rink, and the Dulles SportsPlex hosts an indoor youth roller-hockey league.
This latest proposal is part of a mounting effort to bring more skating options to the county.
Included in that effort is the Loudoun County Skate Project, a nonprofit organization founded by Sterling resident Steve Jefferson. The organization's goal is to raise money to build a skate park somewhere in eastern Loudoun.
