Learn to start a business

The Loudoun Small Business Development Center is hosting a seminar March 18 on starting your own business. Topics will include taxes and licensing, business plan development, financing, marketing and insurance. It will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at George Washington University's Ashburn campus. Business association to meet

The Purcellville Business and Professional Association's annual dinner meeting will take place March 24. New officers will be selected. The meeting will be at the Loudoun Valley Golf and Country Club beginning at 6:30 p.m. See purcellvillebusiness.org for more information.

Hot dog eatery to open

A new hot dog eatery is opening in downtown Leesburg. Called Leshers, the business is at 28 E. King St. According to the sign above the front door, the hot dogs will be “Coney Island” style. No word yet on when it will open.

Smart growth recognized

The Washington Smart Growth Alliance is soliciting applications for its Smart and Sustainable Growth Recognition Program. Deadline for applications is March 30. Application procedures and criteria are at www.sgalliance.org/SGRPrevisedcriteria.pdj. As part of its mission, the Washington Smart Growth Alliance encourages the development of mixed-use, pedestrian and transit-oriented development projects.

Award nominees sought

The Town of Leesburg is accepting nominations for its eighth annual Business Appreciation Awards. Awards will be given in nine categories. The awards ceremony will take place May 19 at the Thomas Birkby House in the historic section of town. Submissions are due by April 6. For more information, visit www.leesburgva.com/Business/baar.

Exhibitors sought

A trade show is seeking exhibitors to take part in an event aimed at marketing products and services for girls ages 8 to 18. Called Active Girlz Expo, the event will be May 16-17 at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly. The event, organizers say, will focus on the active mind, body and soul of girls. Improve selling skills

A seminar on how to sell products or services to existing and new customers will take place March 27. The event is part of the Loudoun Chamber of Chamber and Loudoun CEO Cabinet's Different Thinking Knowledge Series. Sales at Macy's drop

Macy's Inc. reported this month that sales at its stores in February were off 9.3 percent compared to February 2008. Total sales last month were $1.58 billion. The company has more than 800 stores in 45 states, including one at Dulles Town Center.
