Gas prices begin falling in time for holiday

Good news for travelers this holiday weekend – after a sharp climb in May, gas prices are beginning to fall.

The average price in Virginia rose 32 cents from May to June, reaching an average of $2.49.

The trend reversed at the end of June, with Virginia gas prices dropping 4 cents in the past week. Nationwide, gas prices are holding steady.

"While it is always hard to predict what gas prices are going to do, demand is still down, so the prices should level off and go down," said Windy VanCuren, AAA spokeswoman for the mid-Atlantic region.

"Although gas was cheaper [in May], from an overall perspective, we were paying $4.15 a gallon last year."

Travelers can help offset their costs by making sure their vehicles get the best possible mileage. This includes vehicle maintenance, properly inflated tires and driving at slower speeds.
