The Big Bangs

Loudoun County is celebrating the birthday of the United States big time, with something planned for two days and, if it rains, three days straight, beginning July 3. From east to west, north to south, there is everything from parades large and small to live music to barbecue to clogging to fireworks. Take your pick from the list. Take your time. It's a long list.


Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion

Saturday, July 4 (Rain date July 5)

Schedule:

•10:30 a.m. -- Parade; bikes, wagons and strollers welcome; one mile starting at Fincastle Field to Ringold Drive to lake path to pavilion.

•11 a.m.-4 p.m. -- Party with inflatables, food, swimming, games.

•7:15 p.m. -- Suburban Rush Band begins playing.

•8:15 p.m. -- Fireworks, then more music from Suburban Rush Band.

•Dark -- "Low-flying” fireworks show from island in Ashburn Lake.

•6 p.m. -- Landshark Band in concert at Ida Lee. Food for sale, including funnel cakes, ice cream, barbecue.

Parade: Begins at 9:30 a.m. Includes firetrucks, decorated automobiles, bicycles, strollers, tractors and anyone else who wants to join. Route: from the school down Evening Star Drive to East Loudoun Street and the town park.

Activities: Children's activities, lemonade, bake sale coordinated by the Round Hill Junior Women's Group, and acoustic guitar favorites by Barry Charlton. There will be a collection of non-perishable food and personal hygiene items for Loudoun Interfaith Relief and for a new food bank in town.


South Riding

South Riding Golf Club

Friday, July 3, 6-10 p.m.

Schedule:

•6 p.m. -- Parade begins from Center Street and South Riding Boulevard, right on Upper Clubhouse to South Riding Golf Club; distance is half-mile. Bikes, trikes, buggies, strollers, wagons, small floats welcome. Blankets, chairs, picnics encouraged. Food available for purchase.

•7 p.m. -- King of Swing in concert

•9:30 p.m. -- Fireworks

•6 p.m. -- Live music, potluck dinner at Bond Street Tanyard (last names beginning with A-I bring salad, J-Q dessert, R-Z main dish; bring serving spoon and enough food for 8-10 people). Bring own drinks, lawn chairs, blankets.

•Dark -- Fireworks at Water Street Meadow

•10-10:45 a.m. -- Parade registration on Factory Street

•11 a.m. -- Parade with decorated bicycles, vehicles and marchers down Factory Street to the Bond Street Tanyard.

•11:45 a.m. -- Patriotic songs, remarks, food (hot dogs, drinks, watermelon), music, photos

•Afternoon -- Greystone Pool open (guest fee for nonmembers)
