Park hiring teens

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is hiring area teenagers to work at the West Virginia park this summer. Run by the park's Youth Conservation Corps, employment will take place from June 21 to Aug. 15. Jobs include grounds, trails and road maintenance, and historical interpretation. Mall lands music school

Bach to Rock, a local chain of music schools, is opening a location at Lansdowne Town Center. The school will occupy space once home to Bella Diamonds jewelry store. According to the schools' Web site, the Lansdowne location is slated to open in June. For more information, see www.b2rmusic.com.

Organics survey launched

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will be conducting its first nationwide organics survey this spring. Starting in May, the department will mail survey forms to all known organic farms. The survey will touch on production, marketing, income and expenses associated with organic food production. Completed surveys are due back to the department by June 17. They can be filled out online at www.agcensus.usda.gov.

Section 8 meetings planned

The Loudoun County Department of Family Services is hosting two free meetings in June for property owners interested in renting their properties through the federal government's Housing Choice Voucher, also called Section 8, program.

The meetings are at the following times:

  • June 2, 10 a.m.-noon, at the Cascades Library, Meeting Room B, 21030 Whitfield Place, Potomac Falls

  • June 3, 2-4 p.m., at the Loudoun County Department of Family Services, second floor, Shenandoah Conference Room, 102 Heritage Way NE, Leesburg

Commission to meet May 1

The next meeting of the Loudoun County Economic Development Commission is May 1 starting at 8 a.m. It will be held at the Ida Lee Recreation Center, which is off U.S. 15 just north of downtown Leesburg. Created by the Board of Supervisors in 1995, the commission is a public/private partnership that promotes the county’s economic growth.

Business seminar April 30

The Loudoun Small Business Development Center will conduct a seminar April 30 on how to start your own business. The seminar will take place 6-8:30 p.m. at the George Washington University campus in Ashburn. To register, call 703-430-7222 or e-mail sbdc@loudounsbdc.org. Those who do not register are not guaranteed seating or handouts.

Local company honored

Leesburg's FedConsulting Inc. this month received the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's 2009 Small Business Achievement Award. The company was honored for providing mission support at the department's Federal Law Enforcement Training Center based in Georgia.
