Biz Bites: Free haircuts, new mixer, Fortune 500
Free cuts for the unemployedA hair salon is doing its part to turn around the gloomy economy.
Radiance Salon & Medi-Spa, which has locations in Broadlands and Lansdowne, is giving away free haircuts and color treatments to anyone who has recently been laid off.
Normally, a haircut at Radiance would run between $55 and $75 with color going for $70.
“We want to make sure people look good for their interviews,” said Aimee Preast, general manager of the Broadlands Radiance.
To qualify, the shop, which serves women and men, is asking that you supply a photo identification and a stub showing your unemployment compensation. The free service is available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The salon asks only that customers leave a 15 percent tip.
“It's good karma to give back,” Preast said.
Radiance's two locations are 43150 Broadlands Center Place, 703-723-4600; and 19305 Winmeade Drive, Lansdowne, 571-333-3005.
Can coffee draw a crowd?
The Leesburg Economic Development Commission is turning to free doughnuts and coffee to attract more people to its monthly meetings.
Perhaps starting with its May 20 meeting, the commission, which acts as a conduit between the business community and town council, will host a morning business mixer starting at 7:30 a.m., just before each meeting gets underway. Refreshments will be available. Meetings take place in the lower level at Town Hall.
Frustrated by a lack of attendance by the local business community, the idea was presented at the group's sparsely attended April 15 gathering. More details will be made available in May.
