Wegmans ranked No. 1

In its May issue, Consumer Reports magazine ranks Wegmans as the best supermarket in the country.

Wegmans, which plans to open its fifth Washington, D.C.-area location in Leesburg Nov. 8, had perfect scores for service, cleanliness and perishables. It scored only average for price, giving it an overall customer score of 87 out of 100.

Wegmans currently has stores in Sterling, Woodbridge, Fairfax and Gainesville.

Other stores and their ratings in the issue include Trader Joe's, second; Harris Teeter, fifth; Whole Foods, eighth; Safeway, 44th; and Giant, 54th.

The ratings were based on surveys involving nearly 33,000 shoppers.

540 homes proposed

Bethesda-based Fairfield Ryan’s Corner LLC wants to build 540 townhomes and apartments on 22 acres near the intersection of Ashburn Village Boulevard and Shellhorn Road. The development would be across from the Shoppes at Ryan Park. Loudoun's Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposal April 16 beginning at 6 p.m. The hearing will take place in the board room of the Loudoun County Government Center in Leesburg.

Doughnut shop opens

There are now two Fractured Prune Donut Shoppes within Loudoun's borders. This month, the second location opened in Leesburg at 828 S. King St. Founded in Ocean City, Md., the chain is known for its fresh doughnuts made to order. The other local Fractured Prune is at 23520 Overland Drive in Dulles. Job fair for teens May 2

A summer job fair for teenagers is scheduled for May 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Sterling Community Center, 120 Enterprise St. Businesses interested in participating should call Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio's assistant at 703-771-5819.

Executive stepping down

Matthew Quinn will step down as executive director of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation after nine years in the position. Based in Lansdowne, the nonprofit organization helps students pay for college. Quinn is the organization's founding executive director. A successor is expected to be named by late 2009.

Technology forum April 17

The Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce will host a technology forum Friday. The keynote speaker will be Mark McLaughlin, president of VeriSign Inc. The event will run from 8 a.m. to noon and will take place at the George Washington University campus in Ashburn. For registration information, see www.loudounchamber.org.

Lower revenues reported

Dulles-based satellite imaging company GeoEye Inc. reported April 2 that revenues were down in 2008. During the fourth quarter of last year, the company said its revenues -- $40.7 million -- were off by 7 percent compared to the same period in 2007. Also, the company said its revenues for all of 2008 -- $146.7 million -- were down 20 percent from 2007.
