Insurer reports strong 2008

Loudoun Mutual Insurance Company said it was able to cover all of its insurance claims in 2008.

Based in Waterford and founded in 1849, Loudoun Mutual is Loudoun's oldest continuously run company. The company is a co-op owned by and operated for the benefit of its 39,000 policyholders.

In 2008, the company paid for 2,280 claims totaling about $11.6 million. It has assets of $45.8 million and a policyholders’ security account of $26.4 million.

In a statement, the company described its current financial footing as “strong.”

Unemployment at 5.2 percent

The unemployment rate in Northern Virginia stood at 5.2 percent in February, up from 2.7 percent the previous February, according to new data from the Virginia Employment Commission. The rate was 4.7 percent in January. Statewide, unemployment was 7 percent in February, up from 3.6 percent a year earlier.

Foreclosed homes targeted

Purcellville's Lauten Construction, in business for 22 years, recently launched a new division that will focus on remodeling foreclosed homes.

Owners of the company said they want to help stabilize home values in Loudoun.

“It is in every property owner’s interest to get foreclosed homes fixed and resold,” said owner Elsa Lauten.

Target has best prices

The best deals on groceries in Loudoun, according to a new survey, are at Target. According to Ashburn-based Market Resource Associates, it costs $62.99 at Target to feed a family of two adults and two teenagers breakfast, lunch and dinner for one day.

Target had the lowest prices for breakfast and lunch items, while Harris Teeter had the lowest prices for dinner items. The survey took place at stores in Ashburn, Leesburg and Sterling on March 31 and included a mix of name brands and store brands.

Loudoun wines in London

Two wineries from Loudoun will represent Virginia at the London International Wine Fair. They include Hillsboro's Breaux Vineyards and Waterford's Corcoran Vineyards. More than 300 wines will be available for tasting at the event, which is scheduled for May 12-14. Eleven wineries from Virginia plan to make the trip.

Business seminar planned

The Loudoun Small Business Development Center will hold a seminar April 22 on how to energize your retail or restaurant business. The seminar will be led by Casey Willson, who has 35 years of experience helping stores and restaurants improve business.
