Purcellville News: Dominion Power hosts meeting with residents
Power updateKen Barker of Dominion Virginia Power will meet with citizens May 21 at 7 p.m. in town hall to give an update on the company's efforts to prevent power outages. The forum will be open to public questions.
Walking tall
For the third year in a row, Purcellville has received federal money (through the SAFETEA-LU program) to upgrade the downtown streetscapes. This year's grant is $276,500, bringing the total to $945,000. Under the grant program, the federal government provides 80 percent of the costs of an approved project, and the remaining comes from local matching funds and in-kind services.
The Virginia Department of Transportation has approved proceeding to preliminary engineering for the Downtown Streetscapes Enhancement – new and updated sidewalks, new and upgraded crosswalks (including the raised table design), modern streetlights with an appropriate period design, trees and benches, and other features.
Tee time
The second annual Town of Purcellville Golf Tournament is set for June 5 (rain date June 9) at the Loudoun Golf and Country Club. All proceeds go to the Upper Loudoun Little League, which manages games for nearly 900 boys and girls.
Space is limited to 120 golfers and registration closes May 30. Registration forms can be downloaded at www.purcellvilleva.gov.
Businesses and clubs that want to help sponsor the tournament -- and help those 900 players -- can call Cheryl Herman, 540-751-2326, or e-mail cherman@purcellvilleva.gov.
Bucks for books
Patrick Henry College's student-run Community Involvement Commission raised $1,000 for the Purcellville Centennial book fund. For four Thursdays in April and May, students, staff and faculty, usually restricted to business-casual dress on campus, traded bucks for the privilege of wearing blue jeans.
The Purcellville Centennial Committee has commissioned a book chronicling the town's history in documents and photographs. Cost of production is close to $30,000, and the book will sell for $30 to $40 a copy in local books stores as part of the town's centennial celebration.
Tops in law
The town's American Legion Post 293 has named Purcellville Police Lt. James A. Rust for its Police Officer of the Year award for 2008. The award was presented at the May 13 town council meeting, and Rust will be the guest of honor at the American Legion Hall dinner May 15 at 7 p.m.
For more information, call Police Chief Darryl C. Smith Sr., 540-338-7422.
Think safety
The town's police, partnering with Inova Loudoun Hospital, invite everyone to the third annual Public Safety Day, May 17, at the Loudoun Valley Shopping Center, noon to 4 p.m.
The day includes free bike inspections, child fingerprinting, pictures and an appearance by the Air Care Helicopter. Fire and emergency services will put on demonstrations, as will the canine unit. Interactive activities will focus on family health, safety, nutrition, education, community awareness – and family fun. The Inova Loudoun Mobile Health Van will attend, as will the Blood Mobile, strolling performers, a face painter, balloon artist and the Purcellville Police Barrel Train. A live stage show will feature Ronald McDonald.
