Three people hospitalized after U.S. 15 crash
A mother remains in critical condition and her daughter was also hospitalized after a crash that occurred on U.S. 15 northbound near Tail Race Road on May 7 at 4:46 p.m., according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.
Tan Lai, 29, of Leesburg, was driving his 1998 Toyota 4-Runner in the northbound lanes of U.S. 15 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed into the southbound lanes and struck a 2002 Buick Rendezvous head-on, police said.
The Buick was driven by Lenore West, 51, of Leesburg. Her daughter was in the passenger seat. Police did not release her name because she is under 18.
The impact of the crash sent the Buick rolling down the embankment where it plowed through a fence and reportedly caught on fire, police said.
West was trapped inside her vehicle and witnesses put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.
The Toyota 4-Runner, driven by Lai, rolled onto its side and was struck by a 1998 Buick LeSabre driven by Michael Anthony, 34, of Leesburg, police said.
Anthony was driving behind Lai on U.S. 15 prior to the crash, according to the Sheriff's Office.
West was airlifted to INOVA Fairfax Hospital for life-threatening injuries. Police said and she was listed in critical condition Wednesday evening.
Her daughter was treated and released for minor injuries at Cornwall Campus of Loudoun Hospital.
Lai was transported to Loudoun Hospital for serious injuries and he remained hospitalized Wednesday evening.
Anthony was treated and released at the scene.
Lai was charged with reckless driving and speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, police said.
