Class Acts

The following is a list of ongoing classes in Loudoun County. The list includes everything from dance to computer classes:

Visual arts

Plein aire painting: Watercolor artist Catherine Hillis is offering a four-series class in plein aire painting. Classes, suitable for all instructional levels, will be scheduled at outdoor locations during May and June. Students will be taught how to compose a landscape and develop it into a painting. KidzArt. Guided creativity curriculum for kids. Meets after school on Thursdays at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 37018 Glendale St., Purcellville. Classes are divided into three age groups: ages 3-5 at 2 p.m., and ages 5-7 and 8-11 at 3 p.m. 703-669-3772 or info@kidzart.com.


Theater


“Creating Characters.” Musical theater workshop by the Growing Stage Theatre Co. May 24. $50. Ages 15 and older explore the world of crafting original characters through exercises, interactive in-class writing assignments and exploration of acting techniques.

Music


Piano and voice. The Lil' Bethoven Music Studio in Leesburg is offering classes in beginning piano and voice. The studio is at 314 Rock Spring Drive. The cost for lessons is $15 per half-hour or $30 per hour. For more information, call 703-669-2295 or visit www.lilbethoven.com.

Dance


Hip-Hop/Break/Jazz. A Hip-Hop/Break/Jazz Workshop for children ages 10-15 takes place at the Creative Dance Center in Ashburn. Monday-Friday, June 23-27, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and repeats July 28-Aug. 1, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Hip-hop, break dance, pop & lock and jazz moves will be taught. Jazz shoes are required. Dance Foundations. A Dance Foundations workshop incorporating jazz, lyrical and ballet techniques for ages 11 and older will be offered at the Creative Dance Center in Ashburn Monday-Friday, Aug. 4-8, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. This teaches the foundations of dance and builds technique. Ballet or jazz shoes are required. Children should bring a snack each day. $150 per child. Registration is required. Dance tech. A dance tech workshop takes places at the Creative Dance Center in Ashburn, Aug. 4-8, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. This is a dance-intensive workshop for ages 7-11 on ballet, jazz and lyrical technique with turns and leaps. Clogging. The Blue Ridge Thunder Cloggers are offering beginner clogging lessons. Classes are for adults and children 10 and older, and the cost is $25 per person per month. Scottish dance. Catherine Davidson Fisher, founder of the Davidson School of Highland Dance, is teaching Scottish Highland dance classes at the Old Stone School, 37098 Charles Town Pike, Hillsboro. Classes are Mondays for children 4 and older. Call for details, 301-865-4546.


Senior dance classes. The Leesburg Senior Activity Center offers square dance classes for beginners on Mondays, 7-10 p.m.; line-dancing lessons on Wednesdays, 1-2 p.m.; and tap-dance lessons on Wednesdays, 2-3 p.m. The center is at 215 Depot Court S.E. Free. Call to register, 703-737-8039.


Needlework

Children's needlework seminar: The Loudoun Museum will offer its 13th annual children’s needlework seminar June 23-27, 9 a.m.-noon at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 605 W. Market St. in Leesburg. Aspiring embroiderers age 8 through high school will learn techniques and complete projects based on their level of experience. The cost is $100 per child (discounted for museum members); snacks and materials provided. Nature


“Snakes: Local & Exotic” at Smithsonian Naturalist Center. Saturday, May 24, 1-2:30 p.m. Zoologist George Zug, former curator of herpetology at the National Museum of Natural History and co-author of “Snakes: Smithsonian Answer Book,” will give an introduction on snake anatomy and biology and also discuss snake-human interactions. Language

English. The Loudoun Literacy Council offers English classes with ongoing registration. Call 703-777-2205.

Spanish. Beginning Spanish classes are every Tuesday at Leesburg Senior Activity Center, 215 Depot Court S.E. Cost for 13 weeks is $7. Call 703-737-8039.

ESL. Christ Our Savior Church, at 46611 Jefferson Drive in Sterling, is offering evening classes on English as a Second Language. Fee is $20 for materials. Call 703-433-1500.
