Spartans edge Pride on diamond
Broad Run senior Cole Shain successfully returned to the mound after a two-week absence to lift the Spartans to a 3-2 victory over Heritage May 1 in Ashburn.
Shain, who suffered a second-degree ankle sprain on a baserunning incident April 19 against Manassas Park, struck out six batters over six innings to earn win.
Shain, who will pitch for William & Mary next season, allowed two runs, only one earned, on four hits and three walks.
“Cole threw the ball great,” Spartan coach Pat Cassidy said. “I give Cole a lot of credit for going out there and kind of gutting it out because we didn't play great defense behind him.
Broad Run (8-2 in the Dulles District, 13-3 overall) remain in a first-place tie with Potomac Falls atop the district standings.
The Spartans scored a solo run in the first and pushed the winning runs across in the fourth. Broad Run had nine hits in the game, led by Chris Jessop, Kurt Reitzel and Andrew Mann with two hits each.
“It's a gritty win,” Cassidy said. “Our kids played tough and the Heritage team made it a great ball game.”
Heritage sophomore Andrew Zarabila 'had a strong game on the mound' according to Pride coach Ryan Price.
Zarabila slowed down the Spartan running game, including picking off three base runners at first. He scattered nine hits over six innings, striking out two and walking none.
“Their starter did a nice job,” Cassidy said. “He kept us off balance and picked a couple of guys off.”
Gerald Harvey scored both runs for Heritage (4-6, 5-10). Michael Massey and Zarabila each had an RBI.
Trey Brocke, normally a starter for Broad Run, pitched a perfect seventh inning to record a save. Shain tossed 100 pitches in his return from injury.
