Four Loudoun wrestlers place at state meet

Loudoun County High School senior Tyler Stevens led a contingent of 14 Loudoun grapplers at the Virginia Group AA Wrestling Championships March 7-8 at the Salem Civic Center.

Stevens capped off his high school career with a sixth-place finish at 145 pounds. Heritage delivered the best local team finish in 35th place with 12 points.

Christiansburg captured the team championship with 161.5 points. The state title was the seventh for the Blue Demons, who produced five finalists and two individual champions at the meet.

Grundy totaled 129.5 points to place second. Poquoson (105) finished in third place, while Millbrook (98.5) and William Byrd (59) rounded out the top five.

Stevens won three matches during the two-day tournament to earn his sixth-place finish.

A pair of Heritage juniors – Justin Smith (119) and Jimmy Jurado (140) – placed seventh in their respective weight classes. Smith and Jurado each won three matches.

Another underclassman, junior Paul Rowane of Potomac Falls, placed eighth at 119 pounds. Rowane won two matches to gain a spot in the seventh-place match.

Rowane squared off with a familiar opponent – Justin Smith – in the battle for seventh place. Smith won the match by a 6-4 decision.

Stevens, Smith, Jurado and Rowane were joined by 10 more Loudoun wrestlers at the meet. Sean Dunn (135) was Heritage's third representative.

Broad Run and Park View also qualified three wrestlers for states. David Orr (103), Vince DiRenzo (125) and George Black (215) competed for the Spartans, and Sean Scales (130), Elias Barahona (215) and Ed Guzman (285) represented Park View.

Briar Woods featured two wrestlers – Thomas Hulcher (130) and Mike Fleming (152) -- and Alex Fleming (135) was Dominion's entry.
