Raiders setting softball records

The Loudoun County Raiders' softball team experienced a record-setting season in 2008, as the potent lineup produced several marks that coach Ryan Vance has registered with the Virginia High School League (VHSL).

County's softballers combined to hit safely 287 times in 2008, the second-highest total in VHSL recorded history. They crossed home plate 183 times, the state's fourth-best amount ever.

A new state record was set April 18 when the Raiders collected 23 hits in a game against cross-Leesburg rival Heritage.

“These girls are amazing people and wonderful amateur athletes,” Vance remarked. “They have really developed a deep focus on putting themselves in a position to win games with their unselfish play.”

The Raiders' speedy lefty-swinging center fielder, lead-off batter Rochelle "Rock" Latka, set three state records by herself, including hits (53), stolen bases (32) and runs (41).

“Rochelle is one of those players that comes once in a generation, who can simply take a game over when she is hot,” Vance said.

Loudoun County (20-6) made the title contests of both the Dulles District and the Region II tournaments this year, earning a berth in the Group AA state tournament.
