Lansdowne indoor pool to re-open

After being closed for more than two years, the indoor pool at Lansdowne on the Potomac will reopen July 19.

The community's homeowners association closed the 25-meter pool April 7, 2006, after mold was found in the Potomac Club, a renovated historic dairy barn used as the Lansdowne community center and where the pool in located.

After 27 months, the pool will reopen with a dedication ceremony and ribbon-cutting July 19 at 12 p.m.

"We were disappointed it was gone and now we're going to be happy to have it open," said Jim Samadi, a former resident of Lansdowne who is moving back to the community in October.

Residents and community members expressed frustration that the pool was closed for so long while the homeowners association's board of directors figured out details of the repairs.

The repairs included the installation of a dehumidification system to prevent mold. Ozone generators and automatic chemical feeders have also been installed.

In the end, the cost of fixing the situation reportedly totaled more than $2.5 million, according to the now-defunct "Lansdowne ... and Out in the Open" blog.

Patrick, another resident of the community who said he did not want to publish his last name, said one word sums up how he feels.

"Finally," he said.

"It's been two years, so I forgot what it's like to have the indoor pool," he said. "It was nice while it was open, but it's been so long, I don't really miss it not being there."

Barbara Geradi moved to Lansdowne two years ago and has never had the chance to use the pool since it's been closed the whole time she's lived in Lansdowne.

"I'm excited that it's opening again," she said. "I think it's a good thing. I'm going to take my granddaughter there."
