Sanders Corner helps Katrina victims
The Sanders Corner Elementary community recently donated $735 to help rebuild a library decimated by Hurricane Katrina on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.Sanders Corner librarian Beverley Fahey received a plea from the Hancock County, Miss., School District to help stock its new elementary school library.
Hancock was hit hard by Katrina on Aug. 29, 2005. Since then, it has repaired its middle and high schools and is opening a new school, West Hancock Elementary, next year.
Adding to Hancock County's hardship was the fact that the public library, which the former elementary school shared, was destroyed by Katrina.
Through a program sponsored by Scholastic Books, in which Scholastic matches funds, Fahey raised $535 from Sanders Corner's students to buy books for West Hancock.
With that money, Fahey selected 79 age-appropriate books to be sent to West Hancock.
Sanders Corner's adult volunteers, inspired by the students' efforts, donated $200 to the cause. This money was sent to volunteers in Hancock County.
