Landmark considers selling Easterner, other properties

Norfolk-based media company Landmark Communications Inc. announced Jan. 3 that it is looking into the possible sale of its properties, which include The Weather Channel and nearly 50 newspapers – including the Ashburn-based Loudoun Easterner.

Landmark, a privately held company, also owns the Virginian-Pilot and the Roanoke Times, seven other daily newspapers and, through subsidiary Landmark Community Newspapers Inc., more than 40 community newspapers nationwide. LCNI bought the Loudoun Easterner in August 2005.

“No decisions have been made, but it is possible that Landmark will sell some or all of its community newspapers,” said Richard Barry, vice-chairman of Landmark Community Newspapers.

The Easterner has a circulation of about 65,000, editor Martin Casey said.
