Loudoun County swings past Potomac Falls
The Loudoun County Raiders continued their strong golf season with a 21-stroke victory (148-169) versus the Potomac Falls Panthers on a muggy afternoon Aug. 25 at Westpark Golf Club in Leesburg.
County remained undefeated through three Dulles District dual matches this season.
Over the nine holes on their home course, the Raiders were paced by junior Jon Youst and sophomore Andrew Brenneman, who each carded a 36. Potomac Falls was led by senior Michael Tondi's 39.
In dual-match play, each school fields six golfers, with the lowest four scores contributing to the team's total.
The Raiders' golfers are experienced and young, providing 10th-year coach John Laycock with tough decisions heading into each match.
"We've got a lot of young kids playing well," Laycock said. "Some of our more dramatic matches are our practice sessions, competing for playing spots."
Laycock mentioned that he has had 10 players go under the 80-stroke plateau during 18-hole practice rounds this season.
"We'll compete with everybody," he said. "We're very young but we've got some talent too."
That talent has already produced a second-place finish in the Dulles District Mini-Tournament Aug. 13, and a first among Dulles teams in the Cheers Sports Open Aug. 18.
Under first-year coach Jason Leuck, Potomac Falls is restocking a team that graduated talented Chris Abt and Wyatt Endres, who contributed to the Panthers' strong finish to 2007, when they placed second in the Dulles District tournament and third in the Region II meet.
"It was just a tough day on the course for these guys," Leuck said after Monday's round. "I'm not sure if we were 100 percent here mentally. We left some putts short."
Like Laycock, Leuck's team is deep with young players. He says he has yet to field the same lineup twice this season.
"It's definitely a progression, coming together as a team," Leuck said. “We're making big strides forward. They're all playing very consistently, just within a few strokes of each other."
Falcons win
Briar Woods shot a 154 to finish 22 strokes better than Park View in a Dulles District dual match Aug. 25 at Algonkian Regional Park Golf Course in Sterling. Robbie Mitchell led the Falcons with his nine-hole round of 36.
