Findings could save Loudoun schools $2 million

Loudoun County Public Schools could save $2 million over five years by implementing some changes, according to an efficiency review.

The School Board sought the review, which was conducted over the last year by MGT of America Inc., for the Virginia Department of Education. The county did not have to pay for the review.

Kathy Brooks, of MGT, presented a summary of the findings to the School Board Aug. 12.

Many recommendations were made. Here are a few.

  • Restructure School Board committees and develop an annual board self-assessment.

  • Employ an additional director of elementary education.

  • Lobby the county to simplify the school site acquisition process.

  • Reorganize maintenance crews and add a custodian.

  • Create an energy coordinator position to oversee all energy management programs.

  • Change the bus policy to a 12-year replacement schedule.

  • Food services should develop an aggressive marketing plan for students.

The school system was also applauded for what it does well.

  • The Minority Student Achievement Advisory Committee

  • A four-to-one student to computer ratio

  • Training and orientation for new teachers and transportation workers

  • Persistence in meeting minority recruitment, which has grown since 2002 from 5 percent to 21 percent

  • The system for calculating school capacity
