Broad Run's Truiett resigns

Broad Run High School boys' lacrosse coach Phil Truiett, the only coach in the school's varsity history in the sport, announced his resignation Aug. 14.

In his seven seasons at the helm, Truiett's teams ran up a record of 82-30 and hung several championship banners. The Spartans have won at least a share of the last three Dulles District regular season titles, also taking the district tournament in 2006 and 2008 and the Region II crown in 2006.

Broad Run athletic director Jack Kirby said Truiett made the decision so he could spend more time with his family. He makes his home in West Virginia and has a child reaching high school age.

"Coach Truiett did an outstanding job of getting the program started at Broad Run," Kirby said. "He will be missed."

Truiett, a two-time Coach of the Year honoree in the Dulles District, guided Broad Run to the Group AA state tournament twice.

Kirby related that Truiett had considered making the decision last year. Truiett will continue to serve as a social studies teacher at Broad Run.

The athletic director is now tasked with finding Truiett's replacement.

"We're looking for a fundamentals coach, someone that knows the game, someone that can teach, someone that can relate to kids of that age," Kirby said.

The Spartans graduate several members from the 2008 team, but return other key players such as Tim Sanders and Will Field, a pair of Division I commits.

"He's not leaving the cupboard bare," Kirby remarked. "We've got some talented kids coming back, so hopefully we can pick up where we left off."

Truiett could not be reached for comment.
