Sterling Park

Home-town pride, 'Oklahoma,' 'Cars,' decoding, electing, honoring and celebrating

By Chuck Barrick

Home-town pride: It was nice to know that we were missed for the several weeks we did not write a column. Thank you all for your comments and support. Sterling Park has been on the local news quite a lot over the past several weeks. We want to thank all of you who went to the meetings and defended our community to the Board of Supervisors. We have noticed several homes have had the lawns mowed and vehicles are starting to be parked on the street and not the lawns. We all have worked over the years to make our houses homes. We moved here in 1968 and the slogan was “Sterling Park, the city that stayed in the country.” Let's keep it that way. Please do not sit back and be apathetic -- take an interest in our community and make it the way it used to be and can and should be in the future.

'Oklahoma': The Sterling Playmakers' production of “Oklahoma” continues this weekend, Aug. 8-9 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 10, at 2 p.m., on the stage at Potomac Falls High School. General admission is $12 and reserve seating is $15. Tickets are available online at www.sterlingplaymakers.com or at the door. For more information, please call 703-437-6117.

'Cars': The library over in Cascades will present the film "Cars" on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. The movie is rated G and admission is free. Can't beat that. Go and enjoy.

Decoding: The Sterling Library is offering a program to help kids unravel famous codes. They can also learn how to write their own codes and decipher them. The fun begins Thursday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. This program is for kids ages 8-12. For more info, please call 703-430-9500.

Election officers: The Loudoun Electoral Board is looking for officers to help with the presidential election Nov. 4. Any registered voter in Virginia is eligible. For information on how to become an officer of elections, please call 703-777-0548, ext. 5, or visit www.loudoun.gov and select "Voting" from the drop-down menu. I did this for the first time in June for the Congressional primary and had a fine time. Think about it and get in on the action.

Knight of the Year: Congratulations to Don Harris on his selection for the Knight of the Year Award presented by Good Samaritan Council of Knights of Columbus. It was a well-deserved honor.

Happy birthday this week to Murray Howder, Patrick Sweeney, Dara Buckley, Kevin Toomey and Brian Werner.

33 years of columns: We are starting our 33rd year writing this column for the community and have enjoyed every noun, verb and adjective we have written. Please keep us informed, and let's continue to work together.

Have a good week.
