Cicadas, kudos, HUMC, a yard sale, an art show, a trip, voting deadlines, OSS fund, the rummage sale and the community's loss

By Sue Ulland

Cicada symphony: June’s lightning bugs have dwindled down to a precious few while the cicadas have returned earlier than usual to drown out the silence of the still summer days and to herald the dogs days of August. The catalogs and stores remind us that summer vacation is more than half over and that school resumes in the not-too-distant future. Hope your summer days have been enjoyable.

Kudos: Congratulations to Hillsboro Elementary student Jacob Swank, who was selected to be HES’s 2008 recipient of the prestigious Daughters of the American Revolution Citizenship Award. Way to go, Jacob.

HUMC news: A warm Hillsboro welcome to the Rev. Philip Brumback and his wife, Margaret, who have been assigned to the Short Hill Charge, which includes Hillsboro United Methodist Church. The Brumbacks come to Hillsboro from Winchester. Of note should be the new Sunday worship hours -- Sunday school 9-9:40 a.m. and Sunday worship service 9:45-10:45 a.m. These new hours are subject to change; but if they do change, I will keep you informed.

Yard sale: After a lengthy hiatus, the HUMC plans to sponsor a yard sale, Saturday, Sept. 6, starting at 8 a.m. Details will be forthcoming.

Art Show: The Round Hill Arts Center presents a unique exhibit, “A Little Art Show,” featured at the center’s gallery through August. The show features 69 pieces from 22 artists in a variety of media. The small (all are 12 by 12 inches or less) and affordable works include miniature oils, collage, fused glass, nature photography and more. The gallery is open Wednesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. It is at 6 W. Loudoun St. in the center of Round Hill. Questions? Visit www.roundhillartscenter.org or call 540-338-5050.

Six Flags trips: The Douglass Community Center is sponsoring trips to the Six Flags amusement park. The cost is only $8, and those under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Trips depart and return from the DCC. Trips are Aug. 13 and Aug. 20. For more information or to register, e-mail dcc@loudoun.gov or call 703-771-5913.

Registration deadline: The presidential campaign is heating up, and it is time to think about voting in the Nov. 4 election. If you are not already registered in Loudoun County, the deadline to register to vote in this election is Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. Extended hours for absentee voting begin Oct. 20. Saturday absentee voting takes place Oct. 20 and Nov. 1. Mark your calendars now so your vote will count. Additionally, the Loudoun County Electoral Board is seeking election officers. This is a compensated position. If you are interested, e-mail elections@loudoun.gov or call 703-777-0548 to find out where to register near you.

Old Stone School Fund: Those wishing to donate online via Paypal account or by check to the restoration of the OSS following the recent fire can do so on the HCA Web site, www.hillsborova.org. work is progressing.

Family night movies: Fireman’s Field in Purcellville will be the venue for Family Movie Night Friday, Aug. 15. “Ratatouille” will be shown. This is a family-oriented, free event. Bring a blanket or chairs and enjoy the show.

Rummage sale: The Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital continues to seek donations for its 70th annual rummage sale scheduled for Oct. 17-18 (9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days) at the Morven Park Equestrian Center just north of Leesburg off U.S. 15 N. All proceeds benefit the hospital. To donate, call 703-771-2985 and leave a message. A member will return your call and set up a convenient time and place to meet. Help The Ladies Board celebrates 70 years of giving to the community by donating your usable items to its rummage sale. Something new has been added this year. For the usual sale hours, no admission will be charged, but those opting for ticketed early admission (ie. 8-9 a.m.) will be charged a $5 fee.

Sympathy: Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family and friends of longtime Hillsboro resident Shirley Tabor, who died July 22 at her home with family at her side. Please keep children Fred and Sarah and the extended Tabor family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. Further details were not available at this writing.

Do remember: Please remember those in nursing homes, those confined to their homes and those in assisted living: Betty Creamer, Mary Lee Dailey, Betty Fleming, Kay Copeland, Wilma Helton, Nancy Miller, Lawrence Thompson and Terry Thompson. Cards, calls and visits are always appreciated. Additionally, Terry Jones, Judi Legard, Mabel Rodgers and Bev Walker are recovering.

Birthdays: Happy birthday wishes this week go out to Harold Ayers, Andre Williams, Sarah Page, Tara Dalefield, Jacob Burke, Crystal Owings, Daniel Collins and Kevin Stone. Enjoy your special days.
