Briefs: Germany trip, rain, charity drive

Overseas business

Board of Supervisors Chairman Scott York (I-at large) and business and tourism officials from Loudoun were in Germany part of this week and last week in an attempt to attract more international businesses to Loudoun.

“A large part of our business community is foreign, and while we continually prospect for domestic companies to locate in Loudoun, we have also begun an effort to introduce Loudoun County to the world,” York wrote from Germany in a constituent newsletter.

Currently, about 50 international companies have established a presence in Loudoun.

Two years ago, supervisors agreed to name Main-Taunus-Kreis as Loudoun's sister county. The German locality of 230,000 people is west of Frankfurt.

In May, a team of journalists from Main-Taunus-Kreis will visit Loudoun, while in the fall, students from the German county will also travel here.

Though not citing an amount, York said the trip was largely paid for by the local business community.

Rain totals

Soaking showers dropped 3.84 inches of rain at Washington Dulles International Airport from Sunday through early Tuesday. The rain total at the airport so far in 2008 is 11.72 inches, which is average for this point in the year, according to the National Weather Service.

Bike to Work

Loudoun will again take part in the region's annual Bike to Work Day on May 16. The day celebrates clean, healthy commuting and is open to new and experienced bicycle riders.

For the event, Loudoun will host two pit stops for riders featuring free food, giveaways and raffles. The pit stops will be along the Washington and Old Dominion Trail at Raflo Park in Leesburg from 6-9 a.m. and at the Orbital Sciences Corp. campus in Sterling from 6:30-9 a.m.

The event is free, but riders are encouraged to preregister at www.waba.org by May 9 in order to receive a free T-shirt.

Charity drive

Owners of the Dulles Greenway will donate all of the tolls collected on May 15 to local charities. Last year, the Drive for Charity Event raised more than $180,000 for the March of Dimes, the Loudoun Chapter of the Special Olympics, Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter, Fresh Air/Full Care, Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and the Dulles Greenway Citizenship Award.

“The last couple races cost $20 million. ... You hope it doesn't cost that much, but you have to be prepared.”

I challange the Times Mirror to uncover the taxpayer cost of this vacation? Do not accept Scott Yorks statement of it was mostly paid for with private funds. What does mostly mean ? Lost staff time while they could have been handeling taxpayer issues ?
