Bulldogs’ Olson commits to Wake Forest

Stone Bridge High School junior Mike Olson has verbally committed to play football for Wake Forest University beginning in 2009.

Olson, a 6-4, 215-pound outside linebacker, visited Virginia, N.C. State, Syracuse and Wake Forest this spring.

He was planning a trip to Boston College as well, but cancelled those plans once the Demon Deacons made an official offer.

Wake Forest, located in Winston Salem, N.C., is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

“The coaches, the atmosphere and the players,” Olson said of what he liked about Wake Forest. “The relationships the players and coaches have remind me of Stone Bridge. The players want to be there. The campus is beautiful and the facilities were really nice.”

Olson really blossomed in his junior season. He collected All-District, All-Region and All-State honors after helping the Bulldogs claim the 2007 Virginia Division 5 championship.

Olson, who has added 30 pounds to his frame since the end of last football season, impressed college coaches with his quickness and vision. He formerly played soccer as a youth and wrestled in high school before centering his focus on football.

“It’s awesome,” Olson said of the opportunity to play Division I football. “I’ve worked so hard for everything. It’s nice to have someone believe in my skills.”

Olson was greeted by a familiar face when he visited Wake Forest. Stone Bridge 2007 graduate Devon 'Ylou' Brown is a redshirt freshman for the Demon Deacons. Olson credited Brown for informing the Wake Forest coaching staff about the quality of players the Bulldogs produce.

Olson is the third Stone Bridge junior to commit to an ACC school. Lineman David Wang (Virginia Tech) and Brian Slay (N.C. State) have already committed.

“We work together as a team and push each other to reach our goals and play Division I football,” Olson said. “We work hard but we couldn’t do it without our coaches.”
