Starting Lineup

Freedom's first

The Eagles collected their first victory in the three-year history of the girls' tennis program April 1 with a 7-2 win over George Mason.

Freedom swept six singles matches as Carla Wong, Christine Lewis, Katie Carnes, Joanna Tayaman, Lilly Ngyuen and Darlene Tran recorded wins.

Wong has been especially impressive this spring, winning her first four matches at No. 1 singles and teaming with Lewis to post a 4-0 record at No. 1 doubles.

McLean is ACC's best

University of Virginia freshman Matt McLean has been named both Atlantic Coast Conference Swimmer of the Year and Freshman of the Year. The awards were determined by a vote of the league's head coaches.

McLean, a 2006 Potomac Falls graduate, played a pivotal role for the Cavaliers in 2008 as he won the 200 and 500 freestyle events at the league's championship in February.

He swam on the 200 freestyle (1:34.54) and 800 freestyle (6:22.93) squads that set ACC meet records en route to helping Virginia capture its 11th league championship.

McLean also made a splash at the NCAA Championships, delivering a fourth-place showing in the 500 freestyle, and he swam on the 800 freestyle relay team that finished fourth.

Pierson commits

Park View High School senior Paige Pierson will play soccer for Virginia Commonwealth University in the fall. VCU is a Division I program in Richmond, coached by Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak.

Pierson, an All-Dulles District selection as a sophomore, missed her junior season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

All-State hoops

Four Loudoun athletes were selected on the VirginiaPreps.com Group AA All-State basketball team.

Loudoun County senior guard Samantha Akers earned second-team honors on the girls' team. Freedom sophomore center Kelsey Buchanan was a third-team choice, and Broad Run senior forward Alexis Campbell earned honorable mention.

Dominion junior guard Deandre Albritton was an honorable-mention selection on the boys' team.
