Spartans are champsBroad Run captured the 16-team Sports Plus Softball Tournament in Richmond with a 4-3 victory over Battlefield in the championship game March 29.
The Spartans bounced back after surrendering three unearned runs in the first inning. Michelle Clohan scored the winning run in the second inning, and Caitlyn Delahaba struck out 17 and allowed just two hits.
The Spartans also defeated L.C. Bird, 7-0, Cave Spring, 5-0, and Arcadia, 20-0, earlier in the two-day tournament. Judy Betz pitched a no-hitter with seven strikeouts in the March 28 win over Arcadia.
Delahaba was named the tourney's Most Valuable Player, and Karla Powell, Ashley Kramer and Kaitlyn Tiplady were named to the All-Tournament team.
Big win for Pride
Heritage took an impressive early step toward making a charge at the Dulles District boys' soccer crown by defeating defending champion Potomac Falls 1-0 in both squads' district opener March 28 in Leesburg.
Ivan Callejas scored the winning goal in the second half. Pride goalie Luke Dauberman made several big saves to record the shutout.
First-year coach Betsy Munson is off to a 2-0 start at Heritage. Munson guided Clarke County to the Group A State final four times, including two state championships, in seven seasons before taking over at Heritage.
Hot commodity
College football scholarship offers continue to roll in for Stone Bridge junior Zach Thompson.
Thompson, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end, recently added offers from Boston College and Wake Forest to an impressive list that already includes Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, N.C. State and Syracuse.
Thompson is one of several Bulldog juniors likely to play Division I football. Thompson's twin brother, Patrick, the team's quarterback, also is being recruited.
A pair of Stone Bridge juniors ?Brian Slay (N.C. State) and David Wang (Virginia Tech) -- have already verbally committed.
Bulldogs stay hot
Stone Bridge edged Loudoun Valley 8-7 in a girls' lacrosse matchup featuring Loudoun's only two Group AAA schools. Lauren Giusti led the charge with five goals as the Bulldogs improved to 4-0.
Kramer, Meghan DeMartino and Kelly Dunn also scored for Stone Bridge. Michelle Leon denied 17 shots on goal, and Rachael Pascale collected five ground balls.
