College Corner
Virginia Tech snapped the U.S. National team's 185-game pre-Olympic exhibition tour winning streak that dated back to 1996 with a 1-0 victory March 26 in Oklahoma.Loudoun Valley graduate Jessica Everhart started in center field for the Hokies in the historic victory. Pitcher Angela Tincher threw a no-hitter and Virginia Tech scored the game's lone run in the second inning.
Everhart, a junior, has started in 32 games through March 26, hitting .210 with 16 RBIs and 10 runs scored.
Jessica's twin sister, Jennifer, plays softball at Radford. The Everharts were members of Loudoun Valley's 2003 and 2005 state championship teams.
The Virginia Tech/USA game will be televised May 6 at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
Petrella honored
University of Mary Washington sophomore shortstop Kaitlin Petrella earned the Capital Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week award for March 24 after leading the Eagles to a 3-1 week by hitting 7-for-13 with three home runs and seven RBIs.
Petrella, a Heritage High School graduate, has already broken Mary Washington's single-season home run record this spring with six dingers through March 26.
Bradley medals
Les Bradley, another Heritage grad who attends the University of Miami in Florida, earned his first college medal March 1 during the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Bradley set a personal best time of 7.93 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to obtain a medal and earn All-ACC honors. Bradley and his teammates recently began the outdoor season.
Hanna commits
Loudoun County High School senior volleyball player Marguerite Hanna has committed to Azusa Pacific in California over interest from several other schools.
Hanna was an integral part of the Raider 2007 State Championship team. Hanna, a two-time All-State selection, is the fourth Raider senior to commit to play collegiate volleyball.
Pinkston injured
Devin Pinkston, a Notre Dame Academy grad from Purcellville, was off to a great start in his freshman lacrosse season at Presbyterian College before breaking his collarbone battling for a ground ball in a March 17 game against Dartmouth College.
Pinkston started seven games for the Blue Hose and netted his first hat trick March 15 in a 16-5 loss against Bellarmine. Presbyterian, in South Carolina, was winless its first season as a Division I program, including an 18-4 setback against nationally ranked Duke.
Pinkston had successful surgery and is expected to recover in time for his off-season training.
