Hispanic Film Festival comes to Leesburg

Michael and Judy Wilson, the managers of the Tally Ho Theater in Leesburg, know that it's tough for a theater of a certain age to compete in the era of multiplexes and surround sound.

One thing the couple firmly believes is that being small does not mean a theater cannot meet the needs of its community, and this is what the Wilsons are doing.

For two weeks in September, Sept. 14-27, the theater will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Spanish films, art, music and dance.

"It's one of those things that we've talked about for awhile. We have been expanding the community we serve. We already do family entertainment kinds of things. Then, we did research around heritage months. We did some general discussion and talked about Asian, possibly Hispanic. We decided on Hispanic because that's really the population that's growing out there," Michael explained.

The couple attended a Hispanic business networking reception hosted by the Loudoun Chamber of Commerce. Michael indicated they took a very informal poll of several different Hispanic businesses. The interest, Michael said, was there and two of those who joined in planning the events were Florencia Lorenz, chairperson of the Hispanic Business Council and Gisele Gil.

In addition to the films, Dance in Time – a troupe that has performed at the Kennedy Center and the Verizon Center -- will perform Latin dances and audience instruction on Fri., Sept. 14.

The following day, Sat., Sept. 15, Solazo, an extraordinary band from Chile, Argentina and Ecuador, will deliver a unique blend of Latin folk, contemporary dance music and soulful ballads. This performance is presented in cooperation with the Bluemont Concert Series.

Throughout the two-week program, there will be a photograph exhibit of Finca Amaquilco, El Salvador. by Linda Holtslander. This exhibit focuses on the harvesting of coffee beans on the farm.

The four films are:

  • El Cantante (R, Spanish and English),

  • Harry Potter y la Orden del Fenix (PG-13, dubbed in Spanish),

  • Dragones: Destino de Fuego (G, with English subtitles), and

  • Ladrón Que Roba a Ladrón (PG-13, with English subtitles) – there will be a special one night only premiere screening on Thursday Sept. 27.
