Kudos to teens who stayed away from drugs, booze

This past Saturday, many teens from Loudoun Valley High School attended Prom. It was fun to see them dressed with class and style in elegant gowns and tuxes. I know I wasn’t the only parent who proudly captured the moment on film before giving a hug and kiss goodbye to our son as he left with his date and friends.

As a parent and PTO president of Loudoun Valley High School, I commend the students who chose to celebrate their prom night without drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately, field parties, underage drinking and drug use are common temptations among our teens. However, it was nice to see many of our youth abiding the law and having fun without the influence of alcohol or drugs. I especially appreciate the students who chose to attend the Loudoun Valley High School PTO’s After-Prom celebration at Pump It Up in Leesburg. Everyone seemed to have had a great time.

I appreciate the numerous parent volunteers who were devoted to providing a fun and safe place for our teens to gather and continue their celebration. They spent countless hours planning and chaperoning the event. I especially recognize the event coordinators, Georgia Milam and Maureen Curto for doing such a spectacular job. We had about seventy students in attendance, and the PTO gave away $800 in cash prizes. Additionally, I express my gratitude to our generous business and civic sponsors for their financial and gift contributions which helped to make the night a success. I appreciate Patrick Flyn, owner of Pump It Up, for hosting Loudoun Valley’s After-Prom. I am very proud of the way our students conducted themselves while at After-Prom. The students who attended After-prom are among some of the finest youth in our community. As parents and a community, we can all be proud of their choices last Saturday night.

On behalf of the LVHS parents, I also want to express a sincere thank you to the teachers and administrators that organized and chaperoned this year’s Prom. A lot of hard work and planning goes into events like Prom and After-Prom. We sincerely appreciate all that the teachers did to make Prom night a success.
