Hey Vino Vixen - Whatcha Sippin'?!
When people find out I am a wine writer, one of the first questions they invariably ask me is "What is your favorite wine?" I don't have one. It really depends on my mood, the season, the cuisine, the company, etc. However, I always have a few proclivities I seem to enjoy over others - and here is my non-inclusive list at the moment (which may change tomorrow).
Champagne
I drink champagne when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty. ~ (The Great) Madame Lilly Bollinger
I think that about sums up my thoughts on the bubbly. I enjoy it often and all year. But, during the holidays especially so. For the price (~$35), I especially like Piper-Heidsieck Champagne. It has a nice charcoaled oak on the palate and a lingering finish with the right amount of crisp minerality. The House was founded in 1775 and is still family owned - two pluses in my wine book!
Tawny Port
A chilly night by the fireplace with a twinkly Christmas tree in the background begs for a nice glass of Tawny Port. Tawny Ports are young and lively, with hints of nutty wood. I like Churchill's Ten Year Tawny Port. If you have not had the pleasure of sipping a Port (don't feel bad, most have not), try a glass next time you are in your favorite restaurant. Betcha buy a bottle afterwards! (BTW - most restaurants incorrectly serve Port at room temp. Ask them to put a slight chill on it).
