The Greatest Drive Ever
The following is basically for my own enjoyment. It helps me relive the moment I wasn't pissed while driving.Have you ever driven somewhere and in the middle of the trip you think to yourself?
"What's going on? I'm usually really angry when I drive. What's so different about this trip than any other?"
Usually If there is even one another car on the road I turn green and muscly and I start throwing tanks across the desert.
"RICH ANGRY! You not drive good! RICH SMASH! What on radio? Oh boy, Rich love Third Eye Blind!"
I had one of those experiences. The good kind, not the tank throwing kind. Over the weekend I attended a friend's graduation party in Middletown, MD. If you are unfamiliar with the where-abouts of Middletown, it's between Hagerstown and Frederick. I think.
The drive to Middletown Park was rainy and gloomy. Not to mention I had to drive through Burkettsville so I had to keep an eye out for the Blair Witch.
Aside from the rain the party was nice. My friend had rented a pavilion and brought Red, Hot & Blue. After the rain had passed we played a little softball and threw the football around, you know, picnic stuff.
After all the guests had left, and the pavilion was cleaned up, I said my goodbyes and made my way home. On the way back to Leesburg, I realized that for some odd reason I was calm and not in a fit of road rage. I usually don't feel this way while driving. I looked around, sniffing the air, trying to find the gas leak that may have been causing my sudden serenity. Glancing around like an idiot, a sight caught my eye that I had seen a thousand times but never truly noticed. The landscape was absolutely beautiful. The sun was setting, casting the fields, farmland and mountains in an yellow-orange glow. The temperature was in the mid-70's and the breeze was just the right balance of cool and warm. It was corm. It's amazing how much of the world passes us by. Caught in the routine of life, I tend to close off avenues that would bring me happiness. I'm not sure what I mean by that but it sounds good.
I might actually go for a drive this weekend. Maybe someone can yell at me for being a "Sunday Driver" for once. It's times like these when I wish I had a motorcycle. But I remind myself that I would much rather have skid marks than become one. Any inkling that I might have had about getting a bike died after seeing that picture on the news of the drunk idiot plowing trough the crowd of cyclists.
With gas prices on the rise it can be difficult to work up the motivation to go for a drive in the country. So what. Do it anyway. You won't regret it.
Another area that is perfect for a Sunday drive is along 340 across from Harpers Ferry. I passed by the picturesque view of the Potomac River and historical Harpers Ferry, every time I drove to and from college. It was the only part of the drive I enjoyed. Down the road a bit, I entered the stinky realm of the Halltown Paperboard factory. Smelled like eggs and dog breath.

Okay, get your iPod set up to play in your car (we got one of those radio transmitter things). Then download the following podcasts: "The Car Guys", "This American Life", and "RadioLab" from the NPR site. Go out driving on a nice Sunday afternoon. Gambrill Park near Frederick, Shenandoah Park, and Shepherdstown WV are all good destinations but no destination is needed... just drive away West, South, or North of Loudoun. DO NOT go East.
I do this every week and it energizes me and gets me centered for the rest of the week.

Go to Frederick and hit 15 North toward Pennsylvania. At Thurmont, go off into the mountains around Cunningham Falls State Park. There are some beautiful roads to drive up there. On a side note, I used to watch a lot of baseball games at Middletown Park. As a Brunswick High alumni, Middletown was a big rival. As for Burkittsville, my dad is building my brother and sister-in-law a house on some of that beautiful farmland you saw between Blair Witch country and Middletown. Her family owns a big farm and gave them a nice lot to build on. We should all be so lucky.
