A tall order for Stone Bridge

To say the Stone Bridge Bulldogs are going to have their hands full Saturday when Phoebus makes the four-hour trip from Hampton to Ashburn for the Division 5 State football semifinals might be an understatement.

The Phantoms are scary good. The Eastern Region champions have won 20 straight games, registering four shutouts and holding opponents to just 15 total points in their last seven victories. Phoebus (13-0) has won three Division 5 titles since 2001, including the 2006 championship.

The Bulldogs are no slouches either. Stone Bridge captured its fourth region title in the last six years Nov. 23 with a 27-14 over Edison, a state finalist in 2006. The Bulldogs (12-1) feature a deep arsenal of playmakers and arguably the program’s best defensive unit ever.

I plan on catching up with Stone Bridge coach Mickey Thompson later this week. Check back for a preview of the Division 5 State semifinal game.
