Academy Students Receive Coats

In a ceremony steeped in scientific tradition, over 60 students in the Academy of Science's Class of 2011, and three students in the Class of 2008, recieved their lab coats tonight. The ceremony took place in Dominion High School's Auditorum. Mr. George Wolfe, the Academy's director, served as Master of Ceremony and the faculty advisors helped the students don their coats. Dr. James Olds, a neuroscience professor the Director of the Krasnow Institute at George Mason University was the keynote speaker. He told the students he was more nervous addressing them than he was when he was interviewed by Oprah because their studies were important for the future of scientific research. After the students put their coats on, they took the Academy of Science pledge, which reads in part:

Today I make a commitment to my education and training as a student of the Academy of Science. I acknowledge my responsibility to continue the pursuit of knowledge throughout my life.
