Atwater Drive extension a good thing

Extending Atwater Drive in Ashburn is a step in the right direction in efforts to reduce traffic from Route 7.

The extension will help connect Ashburn to the new Loudoun One and give people an alternative from always driving on the busy Route 7. The extension will help residents get to the new nearby elementary school more quickly.

The county needs more side roads. By this I do not mean suburban side streets. What I mean is true roads that can hold more than two lanes of traffic.

It would be nice to find ways to bypass long lights at Route 7 intersections. The county does not have very many straight shot ways to get to Dulles from any part of the county.

This extension is a step in the right direct. While the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors are at it, why not try to petition for more federal and state highway money, rather than depend on the good graces of proffers.

Such proffers may soon dry up in a dwindling real estate and development market. That could be a problem for taxpayers, who will demand new roads to be built while existing streets will need to be repaired.
