Say no to a new government center
The recent push to create a new Loudoun County Government Center makes me wonder if our government is getting too large.
Do we really need more office space at a time when the county is facing a financial shortfall due to lower assessments and increasing expenses? I do not think so.
We cannot afford to pay for a new office complex over the course of the next few years. Many people are having enough trouble right now coming up with mortgage payments.
It seems like we are getting more of everything in the area. More houses, more public employees and more roads. A new government center is just more evidence that Loudoun is sprawling.
The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors needs to make a real effort at instead streamlining government. Maybe we do not need some county departments to be so large. Let's work with what we have before we increase office space. Maybe the additional room is not neccessary for county government.
A careful study of existing county services might be warranted before a new center is considered. Supervisors need to do more than review possible sites. They need to see if a multi-story building is really needed.
If more space is needed, perhaps existing empty office space in any one of the planned communities in Ashburn, Leesburg or Lansdowne should be considered. There is enough empty office space to go around in Loudoun right now. We no not need another multi-level building.
Taxpayer money should not be used in attempts to built another monument to local government such as a new government center. The current center in Leesburg should be sufficent. We need economic and not government growth.
If a new center needs to be built (which it does not) - put it in eastern Loudoun. At least residents would not be hit with parking fees like they do in Leesburg.
