Let it snow, Let it snow!

I have lived here for more than a year and it still surprises me how much people look forward to snow - especially students and teachers.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy snow days with my son Jack as much as the next person. It is just nice that we only average about seven to ten inches a year in Ashburn as opposed to my former home in Batavia, N.Y. We often saw more than 100 inches of snow in New York.

It also puzzles me how things just shut down in Northern Virginia when the snow comes. Roads remain largely unplowed ... schools sometimes shut down for days at a time. I still remember digging our family cars out of the snow in the Empire State. I also remember snow blowing an 120-foot driveway regularly.

Loudoun County could stand to invest in more winter equipment. Seeing a pick-up truck plow Route 7 at one point last year just does not cut it for me - especially outside of Leesburg. I'd be happy to see taxpayer money go to additional winter equipment.

I think it is awesome that in Virginia, Winter remains brief and the sunshine begins in March and lasts well into the Fall. I am yearning for the summer months by the pool and not to make snowmen. The quick snowmelt over the past few days is music to my eyes.

Hopefully, we will not see snow again until ... oh February.
