By Jack Stagman
Loudoun County’s Faith Community unites with hundreds of millions of people across the world to celebrate the largest prayer gathering in History…The Global Day of Prayer on May 10.
Across the globe, hundreds of millions of Christians are planning to meet together in churches, stadiums, parks and homes to celebrate the Global Day of Prayer.
This year, Loudoun Church Alliance in association with local churches is facilitating a County-wide event and will be joining an anticipated 200 countries around the world by hosting a number of events to celebrate the Global Day of Prayer and 2008 Loudoun Awakening initiative.
This year marks the fourth annual Global Day of Prayer. The movement started at the turn of the millennium when many Christians in Cape Town, South Africa, sensed a calling to assemble in prayer and to seek God. During 2001, 45,000 people gathered together for the first prayer event in Cape Town stadium. When the invitation went out to the people across their country to assemble in united prayer for their cities and nation, people filled halls and stadiums of every size. Year after year, millions more sought God together from almost every stream or tradition of Christian faith in every country of the African continent. In 2005 the African Christians invited the world to join them and the result was the first Global Day of Prayer on Pentecost Sunday in 2005, drawing an estimated 200 million people.
In 2006 and again in 2007 on Pentecost Sunday, even greater numbers of Christians gathered in almost every country on earth. The movement continues to spread and deepen and this year on Saturday May 10, 2008, Christians in Loudoun County will join the movement by gathering at Leesburg Church of the Nazarene at 7 PM at 17667 Roxbury Hall Road in Leesburg, VA; (703) 777-6850, to pray and repent with sincere hearts and united hopes for our community. A highlight of this event will be a multiracial /cross-denomination Loudoun County choir with participation from many churches…the first of its kind.
In addition to the Global Day of Prayer event on May 10, there are also 24/7 prayer vigils being established for the 10 days prior to the event and after May 10, Loudoun will see a period of 90 days of blessing where the faith community can go out to bless their community in practical ways, such as painting the homes of the elderly, mowing lawns, helping organizations like Habit for Humanity, and helping the poor through the Good Shepherd Alliance. Christians from every faith tradition are being encouraged to participate in this worldwide prayer gathering.
