A new definition of excellence?

Because of the implementation of the new 10-point grading scale, which includes additional grade weighting for honors and Advanced Placement classes, the criterion for students honored at the annual Excellence in Education Banquet will change for 2010.

Beginning this year, seniors honored at the banquet will be in the top 5 percent of the graduating class in their school academically.

Students will continue to be honored if they are a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, a National Achievement Scholarship semifinalist or a Hispanic Achievement Scholar.

The last time there was a change in the criterion for those being honored was 2004, when the grade point average for honorees was raised from 3.7 to 4.0.

Even using the 4.0 crequirement, last year's banquet honored over 400 students.

Sponsored by the Loudoun Education Foundation, the 2010 Excellence in Education Banquet will be held on Sunday, Nov. 14 at the National Conference Center.
